Abuse Warning Network, 2004: National Estimates of
Drug-Related Emergency Department Visits [pdf]
SAMHSA report presenting national estimates of drug-related
visits to hospital emergency departments (EDs) for 2004,
based on data from the Drug Abuse Warning Network (DAWN).
Estimates for 2004 are based on data submitted by 417 hospitals.
In each participating hospital, ED medical records are reviewed
retrospectively to find the ED visits that were related
to recent drug use. Published by SAMHSA's Office of Applied

Identification
of At-Risk Drinking with Women of Childbearing Age:
A Guide for Primary-Care Providers
This guide provides clinicians with office-based screening
and intervention protocols to reduce drinking in women of
childbearing age and to prevent maternal alcohol use during
the perinatal period. A protocol is also provided for the
detection of fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS), alcohol-related
birth defects (ARBD), and alcohol-related neurodevelopmental
disorder (ARND). The guide is specifically designed for
obstetricians, family physicians, internists, advanced-practice
nurses, and physician assistants who care for women. Produced
by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism
and Office of Research on Minority Health.

This is an ongoing survey of substance use and abuse among
high school and college-aged populations. It includes the
National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) annual report on
college students and adults ages 19-45.

National Survey on Drug Use & Health: National
Results
This report presents the first information from the 2005
National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), an annual
survey sponsored by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health
Services Administration (SAMHSA). The survey is the primary
source of information on the use of illicit drugs, alcohol,
and tobacco in the civilian, noninstitutionalized population
of the United States aged 12 years old or older. The survey
interviews approximately 67,500 persons each year.
Principles
of Drug Addiction Treatment: A Research Based Guide
NIDA's guide based on results of an extensive body of research
and designed to foster more widespread use of scientifically
based treatment components. The guide summarizes basic overarching
principles that characterize effective treatment, elaborates
on these principles by providing answers to frequently raised
questions, describes the types of treatment, and gives examples
of scientifically based and tested treatment components.
