The
tragic shootings on the campus of Virginia
Polytechnic Institute and State University
have raised many questions regarding the
impact of mental illness on college-age young
adults. SAMHSA has placed information
on understanding mental illness on its
Web site to aid in disseminating information
on this important topic. Additionally, the American Psychological Association offers Tips for College and University Students: Managing Your Distress in the Aftermath of the Virginia Tech Shootings.
Funded by SAMHSA, a number of campus-based screening and brief intervention (SBI) demonstration projects are being conducted at colleges and university around the United States to both combat underage drinking/substance use and promote innovative screening and brief intervention practice. These programs target students who have substance use disorders (SUD) and those students who are at risk for SUDs.
SAMHSA currently funds 12 campus-based grantees that identify and intervene with persons with hazardous drinking and/or substance use disorders within the context of student health care.
